*Graduation project*


With ‘Point of View’, Liv kiggen presents a series of
hand-crafted leather wearables that are not only meant to be worn and watched,
but also watch back. Each piece is shaped to give its wearer an empowering
feeling, as the series references weapon holsters in its form language. With
the eye of the wearer hand-painted on each of the accessories, the project
reflects the gaze of others as they are confronted with their act of watching.
For the wearer, the object functions as a protector against looks and gazes,
and as a reminder to look more openly, without judgment. 'Point of View' is a
plea to look with loving eyes instead of judging ones, towards each other and
ourselves.

*Graduation project*

As
children we are encouraged to stumble, fall, get up again, learn and fail. This
trial and error results in stains, tears, laughter, scrapes, bruises, and
scars. Children wear these traces of their learning process as badges of
honour. Praised for trying, whether failing or succeeding.
Adulthood
is less accepting of the messy and clumsy stumbling around that is so
inherently human and a prerequisite for any kind of growth process. Instead, we
tend to present a polished image of ourselves.


While
rummaging through her most cherished childhood objects and memories, Liv Kiggen
found objects that were loved to shreds, scruffy and weathered, and memories
that often involved scrapes and bruises, moments of pain and lessons learnt.
It
is the wear and tear, the material, physical and emotional marks, that show the
richness of (past) experiences. 


A
textile material research into damage, wounds, and traces of intensive use is translated
into 3 objects; a coat, a dress, and a pair of socks. Material expression, shape,
and colour tell a visual story of the bruises, scrapes, and falls (material,
physical, mental and emotional) we go through in our lives. The designs aim to
show and celebrate the value and beauty of these marks. 
Life
leaves traces of living, wear them with pride.

In the past year (2020) we have gone in and out of lockdowns, working from home, meeting online. The lines between private and professional, work and play, have blurred.

Everything takes place in the same space, our own room.
‘Grey’s my favorite colour’ is a mini collection of garments revolving
around 3 questions:
I. What am I actively doing the most? (REALITY)
II. What do I long doing again the most? (DESIRE)
III. What would I like to say the most? (STATEMENT)

Each question is visualised in one outfit, but all the items can be interchanged to merge and form combined looks.


I. REALITY _


Look I is inspired by Liv’s day-to-day behaviour during the COVID lockdowns; sitting at home, working, watching movies, wrapping up in a blanket during the cold winter months.
The outfit consists of a heavy grey woolen ‘blanket’, and a bias-cut voile slipdress. It is finished with a belt made from a recycled bike inner-tube.
A system of grommets and wooden toggles is used to drape the blanket on the body in various ways, this system continues in looks II and III.Embroidered ornaments made by Liv’s grandmother are added to both the blanket and slipdress underneath to reference look III.

II. DESIRE _

	Inspired by festival fashion throughout the decades, look II consists of hand-crocheted underwear, a top, and a skirt. It is completed with a vinyl rain ‘blanket’, finished with a blanket stitch. This blanket is draped using the same grommet-and-toggle system as look I.
The outfit is completed with a belt made from&#38;nbsp; woolen scraps from look I.

All crochet materials were either pre-owned or bought second-hand. It is a mix of natural and synthetic yarns, metal wire, and cut up bike inner tubes.
Two colourful ornaments embroidered by Liv’s grandmother have been embroidered onto the garments as reference to look III.

III. STATEMENT _


	The statement piece of look III is a double layered voile ‘blanket’ with carefully integrated unique hand-crafted pieces found in thriftshops and made by Liv’s grandmother.
The pieces have all been treated with black fabric dye and are delicately stitched between two layers of voile. 
Finished off with a satin hem and grommets, it can be draped on the body in various ways.

Underneath is a thrifted dress with a low-cut back and hand-crocheted hems and straps.

A vinyl belt made from look II scraps holds everything together.

In the past year (2020) we have gone in and out of lockdowns, working from home, meeting online. The lines between private and professional, work and play, have blurred.

Everything takes place in the same space, our own room.
‘Grey’s my favorite colour’ is a mini collection of garments revolving
around 3 questions:
I. What am I actively doing the most? (REALITY)
II. What do I long doing again the most? (DESIRE)
III. What would I like to say the most? (STATEMENT)

Each question is visualised in one outfit, but all the items can be interchanged to merge and form combined looks.

“The key garment of look I was inspired by my own 
habits at home. I would often wrap myself in my fleece blanket to stay warm during online meetings and 
working in the same spot all day long. 
Following the tutorials of survivalist types on how to wear 
a blanket in the wilderness, I created a system with grommets and wooden toggles to wear a blanket in multiple ways. 
This system is carried out throughout the other 2 looks.”

	Inspired by the ‘Art to Wear’ movement from the 70s, where arts &#38;amp; crafts were used to make statements, Liv collected various handicraft items found at thrift shops or made by her grandmother.

Each individual item was once made with patience, attention and love, which, in Liv’s opinion, is often lacking in our fast paced, shallow culture.


By combining these items into a new garment, made with equal amounts of love and attention as the originals, Liv wants to express her own appreciation of arts, crafts, and all other things made with attention, and therefore love.

‘Echoes of Mary’ is a collection of fabric print designs inspired by the 1986 
song ‘Sad Waters’, by Nick Cave &#38;amp; the Bad Seeds.

With every design linked to a phrase from the lyrics, the collection visualises the song’s story and overall feeling.

The designs are ultimately meant to be worn on the human body.

The designs are based on Liv’s own drawings and digitally created compositions consisting of superimposed paintings of the Virgin Mary.

Print techniques used; hand-painting, silkscreening, and acetone transferring.

To bring to life Cave’s religious references throughout his oeuvre and within the song, Liv started this project by exploring existing imagery of the Virgin Mary; Madonnas.

Digital experiments led to stunningly overwhelming, intricate, and
perhaps even disturbing superimposed images that have become the starting point for a part of the pattern collection.

 _&#38;nbsp; Fur.ther *project in cooperation with PRADA*
This furry jewellery collection is made from faux fur from the PRADA AW 21/22 runway show set designed by architecture studio OMA.
Liv’s goal for this project was to transform the faux fur into something natural and subtle, as opposed to its original form, which was very bold and loud. This underlying mindset, inspired by the delicacy and respectful way of working in taxidermy art, has led her to develop a collection of jewellery pieces.

These soft and delicate wearable art pieces have given the fur a new and vastly different life.

As the fur is used in very small amounts, the material becomes ambiguous.
Is it fur?&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Is it feathers?&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp;Is it hair?
A playful dynamic is created between the skin, body hair, and the jewellery.
