Oct ‘20 - Jan ‘21  _  Certainly Uncertain.

Humans want to understand Life. This desire helps us grow and discover, but when we only focus on this, we lose appreciation of the things we don’t know or understand.

“Certainly Uncertain” proposes that we should not only focus on scientifically understanding Life, but appreciating it’s complexity and incomprehensibility as it is.

Through the techniques of rope-making and gimping, three scientific phenomena are translated into physical objects, inviting you to ponder upon the magic that is Life.

Through the looking glass.

This object is inspired by the first image of a black hole (April 2019).

On our quest to discover the secrets of the universe, we are confronted with our own limitations, we cannot know or measure everything, and most of Life, is still a mystery.

Stare into the endlessness, and from
there, look back at yourself.

Wave.

Through the process of sonification, electromagnetic vibrations in the universe can be turned into waves with frequencies within the range of human hearing.

This rope is a physical translation of audio recorded in space, around the planet Earth.

From invisible waves, to audible waves, to light waves forming a physical object.

(not) A rope.

Our limited perception is a controlled hallucination in our brain. Our brain determines how we perceive things, so that we have the best chance of survival.

We can easily be fooled, and see things differently than they actually are.

This rope is not a rope, but it also is.
